Tips for audio podcasts

What do you need for an audio podcast? What equipment do you need? How do you get the perfect sound of your voice? How do you edit and publish your podcast? Answer:

Technology Audio Podcast

First of all, you need at least a smartphone with a good microphone, better an audio recorder with a microphone or a computer with a mixer and podcast microphone. All three may be necessary if you want to record an audio podcast outside in addition to recordings in the studio/office.

I would recommend this starting equipment, which you can get from Amazon:

Microphone for your smartphone >>

Podcast apps

A USB microphone also works even cheaper on the computer, but it won't sound quite as good (a little different):

A tip podcast microphone sound / microphone boom: All microphones that you place on the table or that are attached to the table with a movable arm transmit the sounds of the keyboard, the mouse, the cat jumping on the table while recording. The gallows is a really better solution that I recommend from experience.

Podcast quality tip: You can place a soft blanket under the microphone for better sound. The ceiling ensures less echo or other unwanted background noise.

Which audio podcast are you planning?

But the technology isn't all that matters, you also have to think about what your target group looks like:

  • Are they predominantly young or older people?
  • Men or women or all genders?
  • What is this target group interested in?
  • How can you make money from the target group?

Then it is very interesting what type of audio release you are planning:

  • Topics Podcast
  • Personality P.
  • Interview Podcast
  • Company P.
  • Educational P.
  • P. History
  • ….

If you are clear about the direction of your publication in advance, you can plan better and have a clear concept. Analyzing your ideas also helps you find a name for your audio contribution.

Tip Name for publication: Search in your podcast player (recommendation Pocket Casts) for your topic and see which names are already taken. Under no circumstances should you choose these names; instead, choose another, memorable name.

Research podcast providers

  • Amazon Music
  • Apple Podcasts
  • Audio Now
  • Deezer
  • Google Podcasts
  • Spotify
  • Podimo
  • Pocket Casts

Apple Podcast or others

Which podcast provider is important here? Many podcasts are listened to on Apple. But we podcasters can’t ignore Spotify either. Amazon, Google Podcasts and Pocket Casts are also big platforms.

Publish podcast

By the way, you also have to publish your podcast with the podcast providers mentioned above, because these are the big providers and that's where podcasts are listened to and searched for. This can be done for you:

letscast.fm >>

Podcast recording

Do you have everything ready and would you like to finally get started? If you're recording a personality podcast, you may not need a guest at first. You can do this on your computer or smartphone, or alternatively with the recommended audio recording device.

If you would like to invite one or more guests to podcast, we recommend an internet recording option such as Zencastr.com.

Afterwards it's time to edit the podcast, with a good program:

Podcast editing software

The software is free and excellent Audacity (MAC/PC). Anyone who owns a Mac can come along too Garageband from Apple cut the podcasts very well. A more comprehensive and powerful version of Garageband is LogicPro (chargeable). You can also edit a podcast with Final Cut Pro or Premiere.

Editing the voices is possible with all of the programs mentioned. Equalizer, normalizer, gain, compressor and many other filters are possible.

If, like me, you don't have much experience with audio, then you can leave the best quality to software after editing. Choose for example Auphonic, then your podcast will be well prepared again. Set the following:

Output Loudness Target: -18 LUVS
